From Derek Lam to Stella McCartney designers all over the world were feeling denim this season. And we are not talking about the popular come back of the 70's inspired bottoms, this spring's edition of denim has the spotlight on more than just jeans. Everyone's favorite denim has been reincarnated in refreshing new avatars for the summer. Whether you are tall or tiny, skinny or curvy this season there is a denim version out there for you. From minimalistic blues to crisp casuals there are plenty of ways to embrace this of-the-moment denimania. Check out some of our favorite denim pieces on the cheap and chic:
Do the Denim Dress
Stylists all over are swearing by the simple no fuss denim dress. Its the best way to break your daily denim routine without stepping out of your comfort zone. For a casual laid back vibe, opt for a loose relaxed fit like this straight cut dress from Zara (Rs. 2590). Spruce it up with a skinny belt and pair of flat sandals preferably in an earthy tan shade for a cute put together look. There's no better way to make a style statement with your denim than by dressing it up. Pick a dress with a more fancy silhouette for the evening. Add on some attention grabbing accessories like chunky bangles and some serious high heels for a ultra glamorous take on denim.
Denim Overalls:
No you don't have to be a five year old to rock these babies. Designers have been pushing the comeback of denim overall, rompers, dungarees whatever you may want to call them for quite some time. This spring try out a more grown up version of these childhood favorites. Opt for a shorter version worn with a off shoulder t - shirt to give the look a sexy update (Mango Rs. 3990). If overalls are bit too tomboyish for you then go for a more fitted jumpsuit (Zara Rs. 2590). Either way they are a great way to spend a relaxing summer afternoon.
Denim Shirt:
The classic denim shirt is one thing that never goes out of style. This season freshen up the old stand by and pick a worn in, little oversized button down to highlight its charming boyish vibe. Wear it open over your a basic white tee or button it up over your favorite weekend jeans to try out the double denim trend. Knot it up at the waist (Zara Rs. 2190) and wear it over a maxi dress to hit two latest trends at once.
Denim Accessories:
Another way to get your denim fix is to choose some denim add ons for your outfit. We love these Nine West denim wedges with the faux wood heel and think would look great with all of your summer dresses. And how cute is the studded Carlton denim bag (Rs. 2495). Wear it over the shoulder or carry it as a clutch, this little darling is sure to catch everyone's attention. If you don't own a pair espadrilles, these shoes from Mango (Rs. 5290) might be the best to start with. Knotted peep toe front, cute bow at the back and leather trim on the heel, its these endless details that make this shoe a winner. A word of caution, no matter how much you love denim, more than two denim pieces in an outfit are always a style don't.
Denim Outwear:
This season we take our denim obsessions to a whole new level with not one but three kinds of denim toppers. We all love the perennially cool denim jacket that works with almost everything. Wear yours over your floral summer dress or top it off your denim shorts for the freshest way to do double denim. For a more hip and unexpected alternative to your regular black jacket, toss over a denim blazer over your cocktail dress. Another must have denim topper is the cut off denim vest. Bring out its edgy toughness by teaming it with a graphic tee over a pair of skinny jeans. We recommend throwing this little wonder over a sweet floral dress.
Denim Shorts:
DIY cut off's or store bought, denim shorts are practically a summer uniform. This season skip the tank top and pair your shorts with a jacket or dressier top for a new spin on the summer staple. We love the Forever 21 cuffed hem shorts and the Guess ones with the detachable suspenders.
Denim Skirts:
When it comes to your wardrobe nothing says summer like the comfort of easy breezy skirts. This summer add a cool denim skirt to your jean pool. We love this paper bag skirt from Forever 21. Its light-weight and flattering with pretty details like the pockets and the matching tie up belt. Wear it with a simple white tee for a look that is effortless yet totally chic. If you love the long skirts that have been everywhere recently then you must try out a maxi skirt in denim. This one from Mango (Rs. 2990) will look fabulous with a crisp white shirt and a classic leather belt. Don't forget to add some platform heels to give you those few extra inches.
What are the denim pieces you are gonna be living in this summer?
Big, bold and bizarre ruled the pattern play on the Spring runways this season. This season's prints are not just loud and proud but are full of personality. From the good old leopard and python to the trendy tropical prints to the uber funky fruity ones - its all about larger-than-life prints.
Statement piece:
Nothing like wearing a whimsical outfit to standout from the crowd. For the fashion forward amongst us, this is your moment to be in the center of attention, just grab any any exuberant printed piece that you can get your hands on, the quirkier the better and you are ready to make a dramatic entrance. There is a barrage of bold prints available in the market, we love the overblown poppy print dress from Zara (Rs. 2590) and the retro printed Mango dress (Rs. 4390). Feeling intrepid? Team these dresses with some contrasting bright colored footwear for a gutsy take on the pattern play. For the tamer fashionistas amongst us, create some balance by pairing these bold statement dresses with neutral accessories like metallic pumps and a sleek clutch in a basic hue. Still a bit over the top for your taste? We suggest testing the trend by opting for funky printed accessories like the floral Mary Jane heels from Forever21 or the blooming bag from Aldo to for a striking impact. Adding a vibrant scarf in an electric hue like our pick from Promod is another great way to incorporate the trend.
Mix & Match:
The only thing better than one statement piece? A double dose of statement pieces in an outfit. This spring be a style rebel and create a wild rhapsody by piling on clashing prints. From bold geometrics to vibrant abstracts, anything and everything can be put together in an outfit. Mixing pattern is not just about hitting the latest trend but its also a great way to get maximum mileage out of your current wardrobe. It might sound crazy but there is some method to this pattern madness. The trick to creating mix and match magic lies in the details. Here are few guidelines to help you tackle the mixing monster:
- Color: Keep the prints in a similar color family. An even easier approach is to try a vibrant colored print with a neutral one. Team a basic breton striped top with an bright floral skirt.
- Proportion: Vary the scale of prints. Let one bold graphic element be the focal point of your outfit. If you are going for one big over the top print then partner it with a more subtle and less competitive print one to create balance.
- Texture: Experimenting with different textures is another great way to get on board the mix and match trend. Try pairing a lace skirt with a whimsical silk blouse like this butterfly top from Zara (Rs. 1590 ) for a surprising sophisticated result.
Tip: If you are hesitant of mixing bold prints in one outfit, do not wear them next to each other instead separate them with a neutral piece. Try a bold print top over a solid color skirt with some playful patterned footwear.
Tell us ladies what do you think of going combining clashing prints in an outfit? Love it or hate it?
Its never an easy task to pull off a head-to-toe runway look and most of the attempts end up looking drab. But at a recent jewelry store lunch Natasha Madhvani made a stunning exception and came out looking flawless in a Gucci runway look. Love how she kept the rest of her accessories to a minimum to let the clothes take the center stage. We have tried to recreate her look on a budget with the obvious exception of the gigantic rock on her finger.
The star of this look was her orange skirt highlighted with of-the-moment tassel belt. We picked a similar skirt in a citrusy hue from Vero Moda and paired it with a studded tassel belt from Accessorize. Next step was to look for a nude wrap around top and to our surprise Vero Moda had the perfect top to go with the bright skirt. Finish up the look with a sleek Guess watch (Rs. 10,300 at Shoppers Stop) and a pair of metallic peep toes from Aldo.

We haven't met a girl who doesn't love perfectly polished tips but not all of us have the luxury of time, to make those weekly trips to the salon. So, this week we have rounded up some of the coolest and innovative manicure ideas for you to try at home. Nails are one of the easiest way to add some pizzaz to your daily outfits without spending a fortune. Transform your look in 15 minutes flats and let your fingers to the talking with these easy to-do wearable accents. This spring is not just about fresh colors, a daring manicure is the new statement making accessory. Here is how to nail some of the hottest nail trends at home:
Half Moon Manicure:
There's a classical glamorous half-moon rising this spring. The half-moon manicure, also known as the reverse french manicure was popular in the 1920's and 30's. The trend saw a come back in 2009 with the runways of Christian Dior and Ruffian, but it wasn't until this spring that it caught the fancy of the fashion folks. What's different about this manicure is that the nails are given a touch of color at their cuticles instead of at the tips. Plus, you get to play with two colors- a double bonanza for nail lovers out there. The classic vintage look is done in red with a nude half-moon. For a modern-day take, experiment with different color combinations like gray and silver or black with nude. Although, it might seem impossible to get this look at home, here is step by step guide to get it right:
Step 1: Paint your nails with a base color - the color you want your half-moon to be. If crazy color combinations aren’t your style, a nude base coat is always a wise choice.
Step 2: Allow the nails to dry completely. Then, use a semicircular French-manicure stencil sticker to block off the bottom third of your nail.
Step 3: Now paint your second color pick, from the stencil to the tip of your nail. Wait for the polish to dry before removing the sticker.
Step 4: Finally, apply a clear topcoat over the entire nail.
Voilà, you have a totally swoon worthy manicure ready.
Leopard Talons:
A hint of animal print is a great way to spice up any outfit. So, why not give this playful print a shot on your nails too. This summer amp up the sass factor and escape the everyday with this exotic feline manicure. Here is how to get the ferocious finger nails right in the comfort of your home:
Step1:Apply the base color on your nails and let it dry completely.
Step 2: Pain the spots of similar size with the color of your choice all over the nail. A nail art pen comes in real handy at this point, but a tooth pick or a bobby pin work just as well. Allow some more time for the spots to dry off.
Step 3: Once the second layer is dry, use a thin black liner brush to outline the spots. This could be tricky, so keep a steady hand and preferably support your arm and wrist.
Step 4: In the end, apply a clear top coat to seal in all the layers.
Have fun with your manicure and try unexpected color combinations for a bold look.
Tip 1: Practice and patience are the key virtues with this manicure. And worry not, if the spots are not exactly the same, neither are the real ones.
Tip 2: Unless, you moonlight as a casino host we suggest you trim your nails to a shorter length.
Polka Dot:
When it comes to prints, nothing beats the cute punch of polka dots. Polka dots have the power to instantly pump up your spirits and lift your mood. What can be cuter than a polka dot dress - how about a perky polka dot manicure? Just apply the base coat of your choice and let it dry. Then add small dots with a tooth pick or bobby pin. Apply a clear top coat to set everything in. So simple, so pretty, so perfect!
Funky French Tips:
This season saw lots of modern twists on the classic French Manicure. The infusion of color on the runway is not just limited to clothes, nails too have been accented with a dose of color. There are so many variations to the old school French, with contrasting nail tips appearing in every color of the rainbow. Betsey Johnson's models had neon layers on their French manicures to reflect the youthful spirit of her designs. Punctuate your look with funky french tips and play with bright summer hues to reinvent this traditional style. Just apply 2 coats of the base color and then swipe a thin stripe at the edge of the nail with the second color and top it all off with a cleat coat. Go for nude nails with a brighter tip or pick up two contrasting shades for a bolder look - the options are just endless.
Fun ideas, right? What are the manicures you cannot wait to play with? And don't forget to show off your DIY nail art in our forum section.
Cargo pants might not have been known for their style quotient but recently they got a super sleek makeover with the skinny cargos that have the perfect mix of femininity with utility. Cargo pants make for a great alternative to your regular jeans and can be the easiest piece to wear in your closet. Take a cue from the always stylish Charlize Theron who looked effortlessly cool yet sophisticated at Heathrow airport in London a few days back.
Our pick are these olive green ankle length cargos from Forever 21. Super skinny with zipper details at the ankles, these cargos offer style without the bulk. The streamlined pockets make them incredibly body flattering without compromising on the comfort. Team up the cargos with a basic black tank (also from Forever 21) and throw over a blazer in a relaxed fit to achieve that laid- back chic look. Keep the rest of the look simple by adding just a few accessories. Finish off with a pair of killer heels to stride out in style.
